More than 1,000 homes and businesses across York and Lancaster Counties have gained access to Comporium's fiber-based multi-Gigabit internet service. Over the past few months, Comporium constructed nearly 139 miles of fiber-optic cable to reach rural addresses within southern York County as well as western and northeastern Lancaster County. These projects, requiring over $5.4 million of investment to extend the company’s fiber-optic network, provide customers with access to internet speeds of up to five Gigabits per second and will greatly improve the quality of life in rural areas.

Comporium extended its network to 647 addresses in Lancaster County. In York County, the company partnered with York Electric Cooperative (YEC) to access 373 addresses to Comporium’s high-speed fiber-optic network. Comporium and YEC have worked together over the past few years to bring gigabit speeds to thousands of YEC customers throughout rural York County.

Comporium combined private investment, partnerships and state-issued funds from the American Rescue Plan Act as well as Rural Broadband grants made possible by funding from the South Carolina Department of Commerce. This joint funding approach ensures that the company reaches the maximum number of addresses possible with its state-of-the-art network. Comporium continues to work with state and federal agencies to find ways to extend or upgrade service to more rural customers.

“We are serving more and more rural customers because of our ongoing partnership with the South Carolina Broadband Office,” stated Shaun Barnes, Comporium’s vice president of corporate communications. “Projects like this allow us to reach residents with state-of-the-art fiber technology, meaning that we’ll be able to serve these addresses with our fastest internet speeds. Comporium offers speeds up to 5 Gbps now, with even faster speeds in the not-too-distant future.”
